The success of KSEM 2016
Our colleague and member Franz Lehner informs about the success of the 9th International Conference on Knowledge Science, Engineering and Management that he co-chaired as Program Chair and Local Co-Chair at the University of Passau. Below there is a short report on this event.
As knowledge science - from a scientific perspective – is a highly heterogeneous field combining the influences and ideas of various disciplines
(engineering as well as management), the main orientation of KSEM 2016 was influenced by the interdisciplinary character of the field. The topics covered a broad field of theoretical and practical contributions ranging from classification and clustering, text mining and content analysis, knowledge management and systems, semantics and ontologies, to neural networks, Artificial Intelligence and recommendation systems.
KSEM 2016 attracted a total of 116 submissions from 28 countries all over the world. The Program Committee members together with external reviewers contributed 238 reviews. All papers were double reviewed. As a result, 49 full papers were selected to be included in the proceedings with a competitive acceptance rate of 42 %. The conference proceedings are available as Springer Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI 9983).
Moreover, we were honored to have two prestigious scholars giving keynote speeches at the conference, Prof. Bernd Krieg-Brückner, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI and University of Bremen, gave a speech on „Generic Ontology Design Patterns: Qualitatively Graded Configuration“ and Prof. Eric Tsui from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University spoke aboutv „Re-wiring our brain in the Cloud: Opportunities and Challenges in the Big Data era“.
The conference proceedings this year were dedicated to Prof. Ruqian Lu from the Chinese Academy of Science, Peking, who has founded the KSEM conference series. The Steering Committee was thanking him during the conference opening for his generous and continuous support over the years. He was acknowledged as Honorary Chair in a brief ceremony.
